Differences between butter and margarine in Nigeria

Here is the difference between butter and margarine in Nigeria. It’s important that we all just know that difference between butter and margarine in baking here in Nigeria.

Most times when we post recipes with butter, because there are brands of baking margarine like simas margarine and many others sold in sachets, a lot of people refer to those as butter.

Those sachets of baking margarine are very different from butter.  Butter is not margarine and margarine is not butter.  Both margarine and butter can be used in baking but they are different.

Cakes baked with butter taste better than cakes baked with baking margarine. Butter adds more nutrients to your cooking and gives a better, richer taste.

We all used to think that butter is bad for health but it is no longer that way because modern brands of margarine are actually water soluble and fortified with nutrients.  We k know that any food eaten in moderation is okay for you.  Over eating any food is what’s not okay.

The difference Between butter and margarine is obvious even in the taste, I can tell you that butter is healthier even though both are edible.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BUTTER AND MARGARINE IN NIGERIA

  • Butter is a dairy product made from milk or cream. Contains approximately 80% of butter fat.
  • A hundred grams of butter contains about 717 calories.
  • Butter is rich in cholesterol. Contains sodium, potassium, Vitamin A, Vitamin D and even calcium.
  • Margarine. Modern types of margarine are made from vegetable oils. They contain polyunsaturated fats which is not bad as against older types of margarine that used to contain bad cholesterol saturated fat.
  • Makers of margarine use different plant based oils like canola oil, soya oil, palm.oil and others.
  • Both butter and margarine can be used for cooking and baking.  Even though butter is considered richer, margarine too has its own nutritional benefits
  •  Like I said earlier, modern brands of margarine are fortified with nutrients and good for healthy.  However, both butter and margarine should be used in moderation. Excess of anything is not okay.
  • Butter is more expensive than baking margarine while margarine is sold everywhere even in rural villages.
  • Finally, here in Nigeria, while margarine is sold everywhere by kiosks, small shops and even supermarkets.  Butter is only sold in supermarkets because it needs to be kept refrigerated.
  • Butter, in this part of the world is only sold in cities with big supermarkets. It cannot be placed on any how shelf. All brands of butter require refrigeration to last long.  That might be one of the reason many bakers in Nigeria make use of baking margarine in place of butter.

When I post my baking recipes. Butter is butter and baking margarine is what it is. They are not the same thing.

When someone tells me that she used butter in baking, I like to be specific and ask questions like: Do you mean real butter or baking margarine? Lol

So, that’s my difference between butter and margarine . Can you think of any other difference between these two delicious spreads used in baking?
