Extracting homemade coconut milk by yummy ph

Ever since I learnt simple methods on how to extract coconut milk at home for coconut rice, we have cooked and created many coconut milk recipes. In the past coconuts were grated manually and that can be intense sometimes. To escape the work of manually grating coconuts, we depended on canned coconut milk sold at the markets or coconut milk powder that we just add to water in use.

With all the cases of cancer touching even people that we know personally, everyone is trying to make healthy smart choices when it comes to food. There is nothing wrong with store bought coconut milk, they are life savers and can always come in handy when we need to quickly whip up some food using coconut milk but, to be sure that what I’m eating is fresh with no added preservatives, we extract our coconut milk at home and use with ease.

This homemade coconut milk post does not in any way condemn already made/store bought coconut milk because, that’s what actually saved my life until I discovered that coconuts can be easily blended too.

METHODS OF EXTRACTING COCONUT MILK AT HOME

People use different methods to get the milk out of coconut fruits.  To make large quantities of coconut milk, machines are used for the milk extraction. In some homes, instruments are inserted in, to scrape the coconut flesh and make fresh coconut milk. Food processors are also used by some to make good coconut milk at home.

For me, making coconut milk with blender is my favourite method. In my kitchen, it’s like there’s always some coconuts and that’s because I stopped using already made coconut milk sold in cans and sachets. Making coconut milk at home is easier today than it used to be. Takes very little time from blending the coconuts to filtering out the white coconut milk.

How to make coconut milk for coconut rice using a food blender

Using a food blender to make coconut milk is my go to method. If you know how to use a blender to blend tomatoes in your kitchen, then you can equally make good coconut milk within seconds using same method.

Simple steps for homemade Coconut milk extraction

  • First break the coconuts with a hammer or any heavier object like a machete or even cleaver.  If the pieces are very large, you can break them further by hitting with the sharp object.
  • Take out the coconut meat from the shell by putting a slim sharp knife between the shell and flesh, then with a little pressure, push out the coconut flesh into a bowl.
  • Wash the coconuts with clean water in the sink or any clean container you want to use.
  • Place the pieces of the  clean coconut on a chopping board and further cut into smaller pieces that can be blended easily without ruining the blender blades.
  • Pour a little quantity into a clean blender with some water. Put the lid back on the blender and blend the coconuts by Connecting your  blender to electricity.
  • Blend coconuts until they are smooth, if they turn out too thick while blending, add some more water to help the blender blades run easily. Blend till smooth and empty into a strainer that’s place on a bowl as shown in the picture above.
  • Filter out the fresh coconut milk and use for making delicious coconut rice.
