Do you also care about your egg yolk colour like me or you just enjoy your egg as long as it’s fresh and not smelly?

The colour of an egg yolk means a lot to me. Recently, I stopped craving eggs because it seems the egg yolk colour is not what it used to be. In the past, our eggs had very deep orange or yellow egg yolks. These days, it’s a bit difficult differentiating the egg yolk from the egg white as they both compete on whiteness.

Which of these eggs comes from a healthy chicken?

If you let your backyard chickens free-range even a little bit, they are more likely to have darker yolks and better quality eggs. A dark orange or orange egg yolk likely has better nutritional qualities than a yellow egg yolk.

What happened to the deep yellow or orange egg yolks we used to enjoy in Nigeria?

An orange and yellow egg yolk

Egg yolk colour depends on what the hen is fed. Chickens that feed on free range or are fed organically still produce deep egg yolks, chicken fed with mostly wheat and grass may not give that colourful yolk.

Well, the egg yolks we see watching food programs on TV and Youtube Food channels are so colourful, when we break our own eggs, it’s pale yolk. Is it editing or our eggs not healthy enough?

When I pick a crate of eggs from any farm or shop, as soon as I get home, I try to make one egg from the crate to see the yolk, if it’s not that colourful, I look for another egg vendor the next time. I’m in need of where to shop eggs that give deep orange or yellow yolk right now because it seems just one farm supplies eggs around my area. We shop eggs from different supermarkets and even the market but they all look like the hens were fed the same kind of food.

Incredibleegg.org explains thus:

Yolk color depends on the hen’s diet. If a hen eats plenty of yellow-orange plant pigments called xanthophylls, the xanthophylls will be deposited in the egg yolk. Hens fed mashes containing yellow corn or alfalfa meal lay eggs with medium yellow yolks, while those eating wheat or barley yield lighter-colored yolks.

For me, a colourful egg yolk means more nutrition. There is something that makes that yolk orange or yellow. If the colour is missing, then that nutrient is missing. That’s me o.
