Disposing sanitary pads in Nigeria.

To dispose sanitary pads in Nigeria, if you have any of jik bleach or any other household bleach, methylated spirit, dettol, izal, kerosine or fuel, then it’s easy to make the used pads even more useless before disposing them. With any of these liquids poured directly where menstrual blood stain is on the pad, it changes the blood to a different compound completely. Abi una nor do science? It’s no longer blood and can no longer be used by any Yahoo Yahoo.

That’s what I told my teenage ts to be doing since they always have jik and dettol at school with them.

We need more sense. As the yahoo boys get dirtier, we need to get smarter. Change the blood to jikky blood, or keroblood and let’s see if they can use that kerosine or jik or even fuel smell on pads

If you live in Nigeria right now. Then you have heard the stories. How do you protect your used sanitary pads from being picked up at the dumpster? How do you protect your body fluids from being used by the bad boys.

Never flush your used sanitary pads in the toilet unless it’s a pit toilet. Pads and tampons should not be flushed because they can block pipes and cause stress in future.

In the past, no one cared. We just wrap and drop in the waste bags but not anymore. Not with stories of dirty boys seen around the waste picking things to resell.

Do you have ways you dispose of your used sanitary pads in Nigeria? Aside wrapping a throwing in the waste bin, what else do you do to ensure that your pads don’t end up in any body’s hand?

Below are ways we can destroy or manage used sanitary pads until things get better in Naija.

HOW TO DISPOSE SANITARY PADS IN NIGERIA AND OTHER METHODS TO USE ASIDE PADS

  1. With your fingers, tear off the nylon underneath and flush the soaked cotton inside. Rinse under a tap and throw away that nylon only.
  2. Use good tissue paper on the pad, between your body and the sanitary pad. The tissue collects the blood and you can remove and flush that leaving the pad clean.
  3.  I learned this from my elder sister’s friend when we were traveling to Kumasi(Ghana) and she was on her period. She simply puts the pad on her pant then on top of the pad then she will fold a handful of tissue (the original one without particles) and place it on the pad, so anywhere we get to and she feels like using the restroom, she disposes the tissue and puts another one. If you do it often your pad will hardly be soaked. I have been doing this too and most times my pad is empty, but in the event it gets stained, i wear a disposable glove, cut off the stained part and flush. Then i discard the pad in a nylon. May sound like a long process, but i love it for safety.
  4. Wash off the blood if you not disgusted by blood. Then, throw the clean part by wrapping in newspaper and dropping in the waste bags.
  5. Use treated cotton wool instead of pad. You can flush cotton wool after use (I hope) Those large sized cotton wool we take to the hospital for delivery, get and keep as sanitary cotton wool for your periods.
  6. Use washable cotton material that can be washed and dried and res used.
  7. With your fingers, tear off the nylon underneath and flush the soaked cotton inside. Rinse and dispose of that nylon only.
  8. With a little fuel, you can burn the pad to ashes.
  9. Bury if you live where there’s enough land space at the back of your house.
  10. Use ur finger tip to tear the nylon at the back of the pad, that is the first layer, then remove the inner part and tear it inside water closet, then flush, it dissolves easily like that, you will now wash the outer part inside the toilet too with detergent, and throw inside bin after you have make sure is clean.
  11. Just pour kerosene after use and trash.  The kerosene has destroyed everything, it can no longer be blood. It is now a different compound smelling like kero, even if someone picks it for anything it will not work because the kerosene has destroyed the blood.
  12. burning is the best. For those of you flushing sanitary pads the toilet, stop flushing. It blocks the chamber, you can do that if the building is your own so that when it blocks you will call a plumber and start breaking the chamber with your money not a rented apartment.  only tissue paper is meant to be flushed in the toilet. Use tissue paper as sanitary pads.
  13. If you use tissue paper as sanitary pads, make sure you buy good ones not the cheap ones that can make you start itching after periods.
  14. Pour kerosene , condemned oil or crude oil in the water proof bag where you kept them and throw inside your waste bin. That way, no one can use them.
  15. After using sanitary pad, open it and throw the inner part of it inside the toilet and flush. Then place the outer part on a running tap to rinse and then you throw it into the dustbin.

Finally, never in my life have I been tired of Nigerians than today. Which one is wash the pad before trashing. it’s not me that will eat in your house. Una for kuku drink the water.

  3. Recently, i had to get a drum where i put charcoal and burn the pads to ashes. The drum is necessary because its hidden from the eyes of people and the fire is also contained.
