Caramelized popcorn is kids’ favorite and I always wondered why it’s more expensive than normal popcorn because making caramel popcorn is as easy as ABC.

INGREDIENTS FOR CARAMEL POPCORN

I used just three ingredients to make this caramel popcorn:

1. Popcorn maize

2. Soya oil

3. Sugar

The caramel popcorn video above shows me making this from scratch using a frying pan in my kitchen.

STEPS TO MAKE HOMEMADE CARAMEL POPCORN RECIPE FROM SCRATCH

1. First place a frying pan or any large heavy-based pot on a stove.

2. Next, drop some vegetable oil on the bottom of the pan as shown in the video above. I used soya oil but, you are free to use any vegetable oil.

3. Thirdly,  sprinkle some maize in the pan. Just a few grains. The popcorn will rise and fill the pop once it starts popping so, you don’t want to put too many grains in there.  You can see in the video how the few grains I placed on the bottom of the frying pan poped and filled everywhere before we even caramelized the popcorn.

4. After adding the little popcorn, stir to mix with the oil and turn on the heat.

5. Cover the pan or cooking pot with a lid and wait till you hear popping sounds before checking.

6. Once all or most of the popcorn maize has popped,  you can turn down the heat and sprinkle in the sugar. I used white sugar to make this caramel popcorn and it really really did an amazing job at caramelizing this popcorn the way I like it.

7. As soon as you add the sugar, keep stirring in very low heat until the sugar becomes liquid.  Once it begins to brown,  start flipping the popped corn and mixing.  Be fast about that so your sugar doesn’t burn.

8. Another thing I do when the sugar turns brown is to turn off the heat completely.  I quickly mix and empty the caramel popcorn into a bowl to prevent burning.
