Episiotomy Has Ruined My Birth Canal. Am I Paranoid?

Hello ma. How is the family and kids.
Am a regular reader of WC. Please do help me post this, and also hide my details.
I gave birth to a beautiful baby boy 5weeks ago. In the process of delivery I was given an episiotomy.

I had ‎no idea until I was to be stitched. After I was discharged I was too afraid to look @ what has been done. 3days ago I got the courage to use a mirror and check. And what I saw is definitely not right. I know my birth carnal was going to be a little different after birth
But I don't like or understand what am seeing. The Stitch is healed but its like there is an extra skin attached there its not painful to touch.

I don't know how to explain these. I just know my birth carnal has been ruined. Hubby wants to see but am not comfortable with it. Am I paranoid or is it normal for it to look like that after an episiotomy?. Also the thought of resuming bedroom duties is scary. Please woman in the house how did you do it? and when is the right time to start doing it? Help a troubled sister.
God bless you ma.

  1. Its called tissue granulation. I have the same problem, its 6 months post birth and I am yet to have d excess tissue removed cos I can't stand d pain. Well as long as d excess tissue doesn't hurt me during sex I will let it be abeg.

  2. Yea I have the same. I'm so ashamed about it, I couldn't even bring myself to tell my husband about it. But its very okay. So says my doctor, nothing bad about it. If you want to take itt out, no problem. Prepare for extra pain or just ignore It and pretend you were born with it. It doesn't change your sex life, my baby is aalmost two years and my husband still knows notin about It. So deary keep calm and feel unbothered. Just make sure you are very careful, if you get an infection, I.e if u use bad toilet, its going to start peppering u. But mycoten and antibiotics solves that. Also!!!! If u get pregnant, its going to increase. Just a little doee.
Here's my advice to you, to shrink it a bit , continual hot-water-sit is perfect. The hot water would shrink it very much.
    Thank me later :) .
P:s stay away from tissues after peeeing, always rinse with water. As tissues are not sterilized n can cause infection over der.

Yeah I was going to say the same thing, make sure u continue with hot-water-sit and ensure u add salt to the water and a little detoil or savon, 5weeks postpartum I almost went crazy when I looked down deir,nd I didn't get an episiotomy cos d silly matron was nonchalant and I has a serious tear that had to be patched, def not a great experience, but now, after a year I looks normal no scar or bump but u HAVE to continue with the salt nd hot water and kegel exercises.

  4. My friend dat had her baby in naija complained of d same problem, but I had my baby abroad with epistomy and after 2wks everything went back 2 normal nd presently I'm 9wks post baby. Well I guess its d way dey stitch here in naija maybe they left out some skin. To answer ur bedroom duties I went back 8wks post baby cos I was scared initially bt guess wot? Its was sweet as ever, although I hv'nt started my period so I try nt 2 get preggy soon.

    1. @OLA, i beg to differ i birthed my 2 boys here in Naija (5 & 2 years old) & had episiotomy for both, followed the care instructions & after two weeks i was doing fine again. Maybe your friend's case was peculiar to the hospital she used. We still have good hospitals & doctors here. @poster, sorry to hear that, as others have advised continue with hot, dettol liquid & salt + kegel exercise it works like magic if you are consistent. Take care!

My dear Anony 3:43, u can't compare normal delivery to CS with or without Episitomy normal delivery is still the best,Reasons (1) the money for the CS (2) the pain after CS is much than normal deliver (3) the growing of skin after Episitomy I guess courses no harm but when the stiches for CS doesn't dry well it will start to decay (4) Do u know that some Doc make some mistake in CS that can cos u not to bear children by constantly having miscarrage? I have a prove for that, one of my sister-inlaw had CS when she gave birth to her first child, any time she gets pregg after that first child she will have miscarrage for so many years untill one day a woman asked her if she gave birth by CS and she said yes then the woman directed her to a hospital where they scaned her womb and find out she had a lickage in her womb due to the carelessnes of the doctor and luckly for her after what they did to her by the special grace of God she is now with a bouncing baby,so dear it is not bad to go tru CS but always pray for normal delivery. MRS NCC.

Mrs NCC, she is talking bout those who mock women dat do CS.
Lots of African women mock women who undergo CS even some churches preach against it nd call it ungodly.
Are CS babies different frm babies birthed vaginally?
A lot of women wld ve died today if they hadn't done CS esp those with breech babies, multiplies or pelvic problems.
Even women with HIV can experience mother hood with HIV negative babies, thanx to CS.
Mistakes may occur as with every surgery buy that possibility is very
      minimal.
Mrs NCC am not calling u out am just trlling those who r guilty of mocking wen who under CS that its not right neither is it fair.
      Thank u

  6. Na wah oh. People get time oh. I had an episiotomy for my first child, then I followed the care instructions. I never bothered to look at the place. For my second, I had a stich as well
I ve never bothered to look at it. Ur husband is interested in it because you are drawing attention to it. It does not make any difference to ur life. The time u r using yo worry to worry shld b used to take care of ur baby and get some rest.

  8. Congrats on the birth of your baby. Episiotomy often happens with 1st babies.
With time you'll heal and the area will look much better, although it might not look like it looked before you had a baby.
As mentioned above, keep the area clean, try to air it to keep dry so infection is avoided.
7yrs ago duringthe birth of my1st baby I had a 3rd degree tear as well as an episiotomy and had a forceps delivery. I ended up in theatre immediately after delivery as get it fixed as I was seriously bleeding.
My MIL took very good care of me. She made sure I sat on hot water seam 3times a day. She massed the area, my whole body with towel, hotwater n dettol twice a day. I healed very well and the 'extra skin' shrank eventually. Subsequent births have been easy, tiny tear that doesn't amount to a 1st, 2nd or 3rd degree tear and NO episiotomyas well.
If your husband understands the truama you went through then he should give you time until youare ready.

When you go to buy your dawa, ask the sellers. That was how I learnt. They know how to break down the explanation for you.

    3. @precious, 5kg? Was it normal delivery?

Hello Please how is the hot water steam done? So not to sit inside a tub of water? Please help?

    ReplyDelete

    1. boil some water, pour into a strong bucket that won't melt or fold from the heat. put dettol, salt, etc and sit on the bucket while the steam is rising.
P.S- its too frigging painful, but worth it

      Delete
    2. Yes Precious is correct. Try to endure the pain/burning heat of the steam for as long as you can. Then get up for a few seconds and then reapeat d process over again until d steam stops burning.

You can put the water in a big bowl but let the water not be very hot (lluke warm), add industrial salt and sit on the water. I was told that if the water is too hot, it melts the stiches and so healing is prolonged.

Yes u re right,if the water is to hot,my stitches melted a week after i had my second boy had to go back for d surgery and boy it was more painful.it was like delivery all over again.

  19. For those that wonder what ladies are 'looking for under there', please bear inmind that we are all different and our cases/experiences are different. If one does not feel right down there its better to LOOK and be sure everything is 'intact'.
There are peolpe that are In severe pain down there that has refused to go, some husbands have complained to their wives that she does not look quite right down there, some ladies are forever sore and tender there, some have prolapse whereby the cervix, bowel and urethra are hanging down the vg and you ask why they LOOK.
Our bodies are to be looked after and this involves knowing our body parts be it nose, ears, tummy, throat or vg as long we are not causing any harm. At least if you find something you can see ur doctor to confirm your findings and receive the necessary treatment.

    1. Return to the hospital ASAP and complain to the Doctor. It shouldn't heal that way.
