DOES IKOYI REGISTRY ISSUE BETTER MARRIAGE CERTIFICATES THAN OTHER LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREAS?

Good day madam,

Please I got your email address online. I actually saw it on a forum you were addressing people's questions on marriage certificate registration.

Please i will appreciate if you can guide me on marriage certificate registration. I want to know if there are any difference between the marriage registration done at Federal registry office Ikoyi and registration done at any local government marriage registration office.

We have a challenge of travelling to Federal registry Ikoyi, Lagos due to work and distance.

Thank you and hope to hear from you.

Regards,

  1. Hi everyone, I need to know the requirements, process and cost implications of getting married at the Federal Marriage Registry, Ikoyi. My fiance and I are not in the country at the moment but would love to get married in Nigeria by end of this year, please help with info.

Hi poster, even though ikoyi is the most expensive marriage registry in Nigeria, You don't need to break the bank for it! You go to the registry and fill the forms with 2 passports of couple, then pay N1k. After filling the forms in court then you submit them same day and wait for 21 working days(display of couple info in notice-board). They would calculate the waiting period and then give you your prefered date to come for oath taking. Oath taking is N6k. Then after that you would then choose your wedding date weekdays cheaper than saturdays which is N2k(weekday)/N5k(weekend ie saturday).
On the wedding day you would be asked to either bring a carton of fruitjuice or pay N4k/N5K as the case might be! Try to sweet mouth them and dont show off too much if you don wana be ripped off grin. Also, make sure you bring change on wedding day for offering/celebration for court officials N100/N200 notes will do. DO NOT patronize the photographers they charge so much bring your small camera and a friend can assist with the pics as they do not allow professional photographers/video men. The price Im giving you is what was obtainable 3 years ago when I wedded, prepare to spend more now in 2016 considering the present Naira power.

It's a misconception that ikoyi registry has the only acceptable marriage certificate.

It's the same one. Marriage certificate remains the same everywhere in Nigeria.

I did mine in a bush....lol and I got out of Nigeria with it 2 months later and I still use it everyday everytime here in Canada.

Please don't stress yourself for nothing. Infact I paid so less where I did mine and when I compared it with my friend's own from ikoyi....it's just the same except name, date,etc...lol

So why do people still believe one can't travel out without the federal certificate?

There are only two federal marriage registries in Nigeria. The one in abuja area 10 (not amac) and ikoyi lagos. All others are lga's. A lot of people dont know this but for so many reasons, it is advisable to go to a federal marriage registry... E g proper legal binding, proper documentation which is hardly done properly in nigeria... Better done in the federal reg. Also a lot of fraud is done in the lgas. How

Lagos State High Court, declares Ikeja Local Government and other Local Governments Marriage Certificate Unconstitutional.

Ikoyi registry is the federal registry and issues marriage certificate that conforms with the marriage certificate form (FORM E) under the Marriage Act.

Those with Marriage Certificates from Ikeja and other Local government are to return the irregular and illegal marriage certificate which was "customised" and exchange it for the proper ones.
