  1. You need to give a 21 day notice to the court with yours and fiance's passport photographs which would be placed publicly on their notice board for those three weeks.

You pay a registration sum of about ten thousand naira or less, I can't remember now.
On the wedding day, you, groom and two witnesses are expected to arrive early by 8 am for proceedings. You can wear whatever you like but there should be a covering for your head. Come with your rings and if you want to invite more guests, include entertainment and all, that is up to you and oga.

  2. Once you arrive Nigeria, go straight to the registry you want to use and make enquiries, they'll give you their requirements. Just relax sis, it's not stressful at all.

  3. No the covering on the head is not compulsory. I did mine in middle of this year. Every other thing Chioma said above is correct. You can go with a bible if you don't want to use rings at the court. I used a bible in court and used rings in church

I am not based in Nigeria so my sister had to go and drop our papers (including birth cert) and passports at the court in order for the notice to be put up. When we got into the country 3 days before the wedding, we went to the court to sign some papers which my sis was not allowed to sign and collect the certificate of spinsterhood and bacherlorhood.

We got there that morning at 8 and there was already a crowd. I will suggest you get there earlier if possible as its first come first serve. People get there before the gates open and the guard takes down names on a piece of paper according to how you arrive. They start late though however the whole proceeding does not take up to 30 minutes and you'll be done.

They will also tax your hubby for "flower" money or "band" money. its about 2 – 3 thousand naira.

You should wear a wedding gown or corporate outfit. Native is not allowed. I wore a simple gown with a jacket.

You are allowed to have your own photographer and videographer.

The place is usually crowded so i wouldn't suggest you go with food and drinks.

In total, I went to court with 47 people, all family members from my side and hubby's side 🙂

I did mine early on a tuesday morning so there was space for the whole family to sit but by 12 ish pm when i was leaving, the place was already very rowdy.

Will add any other thing I remember.

  7. Make sure you pack money for bribe paying. those registries are a den of thieves. If anything, I think you should do your registry wedding abroad, then come back to nigeria for church blessing

  27. Hello Lolade, I am planning on getting married to my Nigerian man in December of this year. I am a US citizen. I was looking online to see if the forms are online so I can fill them out and send them to my husband to be. I will be in Lagos for the whole month. I guess we can wait until I get there and do everything next day I arrive. Is there a way to get all the paperwork ready ahead of time?
