Should yam be boiled with salt, sugar or both? Hello Aunty Eya and Wives Connection Fam. I boil yams with salt but now that new yams are
out, I don’t enjoy the taste of my boiled yams. Should yams be boiled with salt or sugar? Which is better?

Please help a learner yam chef.

  1. I always use salt, but i know that some people add sugar…I have never tried it though 'cos I don't know how well it will turn out. Please if anyone has tried using sugar, let us know. I like that sugary taste of old yam, so I guess sugar might make new yams taste better…..kinda like old yams.

  2. Sorry to deviate please. I just got married and hubby's favorite is very elastic pounded yam. I want to get either a mortar and pestle or pounded yam machine but can't tell which produces more elastic pounded yam. Is mortar or machine better? someone please help.

  4. well the elasticity most often is from the specie of the yam, yam wey no one draw poundam till thy kingdom com e no go do, so my candid advice , buy pounder and reserve your energy for the soup preparation. Ado Ok sis

  5. For new yam, I add sugar and no salt, but just two cubes of sugar and then don't put too much water! Allow the yam absorb all the water but not to the extent of letting the yam burn ooo! I learnt this some months back and I so enjoy my new yam boiled this way!

    Meanwhile you'll need a mortar in your house as a home manager. Somethings just can't blend, like Ehuru (calabash nutmeg)

  7. Ah! I have learnt one thing today Oo°˚˚˚°! I HATE new yam it feels like I'm under punishment wen I eat it. But I'll give dis sugar method a try.

  8. I use only sugar both for new and old yam. It tasted great though I don’t know if it has any health complications

  9. I think that salt helps to reduce the sugar sweetness of the yam. When food is too salty, you can add sugar to balance it , so I think that’s why they use salt to cook yam. It naturally contains glucose
