Essential baby items for new moms especially living in Nigeria…

Good morning Aunty Eya, Hello WC, please I need help ASAP. I am due in two weeks and I just realized that the list from the hospital has only items that would be needed before and soon after delivery.

Baby Items for new moms. The ones the hospital will make use of. This is my first and am not sure what the must-have baby items are for a new mom. I don’t want to make the same mistake as my cousin who out of excitement bought so many unnecessary baby items that she never got to use. I
really want to spend wisely even though it’s my first. I entered a baby shop yesterday and there are too many beautiful baby items in there, I got confused, especially with the sales lady trying to make me shop every baby items on sale..

The shop assistant isn’t helping matters either, she has a way of making a customer feel like every baby item in that shop is necessary and important. I had to leave without picking any. Someone please help a newbie mum.

If I can get a list of at say 10 MUST HAVE BABY ITEMS for new moms, even more than that is welcome but with ten I think I should be able to walk into a shop and know what I need.
Thank you all. Looking forward to suggestions from my experienced WC family members.

  3. I'll advise you divide your list into feeding/Bathing/Sleeping/Clothing items… So for feeding – Breast pump, Feeding bottles, Brush to wash d bottles, Bibs. Bathing – Bath-set, bathing-soap, sponge, powder, body cream etc. Sleeping – Baby cot or little-baby sleep-in net, Sleep suits etc. General clothing – You can do just body suits for 0-3months cos u'll be home most of the time. And you can buy something for naming, hospital visits etc.. Before your baby is 3months, you'll know the 'essentials' needed to carry-on from there.

  4. I advise u not too get many clothes for 0-3 months just nappy vest popularly called pin down ( its like a top u just pin under d babies nappy),
sleepsuits also known as over all (it covers baby frm neck down), about 4 cool dressy items cos u wont go out much,
johnson head-to-toe shower gel it can be used to wash d hair and its tear free or any other no-tears soap.
Sterilising unit and liquid (i prefer liquid, d salts sometimes stain.
Pads for ur post baby bleeding.
Baby nail clipper/ baby scissors jst incase he or she has long nails.
    Shawls
    Receiving blanket
    Baby plastic comb
Diaper for new born, ( dnt buy too much of this incase ur baby grows fast or is big frm birth besides u may be getting lots as gifts.
    Baby hats.
Nursing bras and pads for leaks
    Baby lotion
    Baby sponge
Bath tub, buckets, basket (usually comes in set).
A gd quality car seat that actually does the job of protecting ur baby in case of accidents wld not cost less than 15k. Usually comes with base but u wld not use it at first and shld be used rear facing.
Pack d essentials in a small box and be prepared cos d baby may cme anytime.
For urself pack 2 nice outfits for hospital stay and going hme, remember pple wld cme c u and may also be waiting at home, toothpaste nd brush, gd nighty, panties, hair brush nd makeup brush.

For d car seat 4got to add that there are lots of fakes or poorly made ones arnd u can ask any1 u know that owns 1 that has lasted.
Also make sure u buy cotton clothes for ur baby, sme babies react to polyester.
    Their skin is very tender

  6. I'll add to what d 2 anons have written. Baby drawer, for d onesies and body suits, I'll advice u buy 2 packs each of 0-3 months becuz if u buy more it will waste as babies tend to out grow them in less than 3 months sef! If ur house is wide enof u can buy baby cot or bassinet, or buy that baby net that cost 2k u can place it on d bed beside u!buy lots of bibs and baby face napkins. Baby carrier too pls go for the foreign ones Oo°˚˚˚°! Or buy second hand! Becuz dis our naija/ china made snaps very easily. Baby Pacifier, baby rattle.oops going too far. Lol

U wld still be strong enuff to walk arnd in d market, u wld ve been 99 % sure of d sex(if u r checking).
U shld be packed nd organised by 35 wks cos a baby born at 36 wks and above is considered full term.

  16. U wld need a bowl to put diapers, wipes, oil, comb etc.this is for easy access cos you don't want to be looking for stuffs after bathing the baby or during a diaper change.better still you could get a baby changing table with a bowl underneath.I wish u a safe delivery.

  17. Ok so this is a list for delivery in Nigeria right?Because other than diapers, sanitary towels, disposable panties, clothes and toiletries most of the other things being mentioned here are not needed if delivering in the UK or US or those high end private VI hospitals in Lagos. Can't imagine carrying a bucket to the hospital Naija I weep for thee!

  18. You asked for 10 most important items for NOW:

    1)Lady sept pads
    2)olive oil,
    3)spirit and cotton wool
    4)Diapers
5)Vest {long johns)and caps. No need for socks because the long john has a footie.
    6)Shawl/blanket and towel
    7)Fold-able bed net(those with zip)
8)Flask, small cup with cover and a tea-spoon.
9)Toiletries:{Any brand of your choice, and sponge, soap,]
10)A set of baby plastic bath.

Weeks after birth, you would know what you NEED more and some items you have to improvise because it serves the same purpose.

    IMPROVISE:
Sterilization kit: Buy a clear plastic bucket with cover. Every morning pour hot water into it, and change everyday.

Feeding bottle set: Buy a simple 3-in-1 feeding bottles, because if you buy the brand set, you would realize you use 2 mostly and the rest would be left in the box and how long do you want to continue bottle feeding your child?

Car seat: It's not commonly used in Nigeria, but if you are a working mother with a car, and don't have a maid and drops her child at a creche, you would need it. But if otherwise, don't bother.

Bra: Any good bra that holds your breast firm can do the job. Put a clean white handkerchief everyday to soak up any breast milk if you leak.

Remember, there is no strict rule to anything. Just follow your instinct and purse.

God see you through your safe delivery.

  25. Please i went to visit my friend three days after CS in the hospital and this woman had on lipgloss and eyepencil, earrings small stud ones though not to mention her hair was combed well and she looked good for someone who had just gone through surgery. Just because you have a baby does not mean you should stop looking your best she did her makeup when her twins were sleeping. And you wonder why new fathers are more likely to cheat soon after their wives give birth it is because of attitudes like this. This same friend not only had a make up bag but her toiletry bag contained her fav Victoria Secrets body washes, splashes and a bottle of perfume

  34. Getting to Oronyin.. If you're coming from Iyana-Oworo end, after the turning too Ebutte-Metta on 3rd-Mainland bridge, keep watching the signage.. You'll see a turn into "Adeniji". Drive straight in and go straight down. Don't make any turns, just follow the road down. You'll see a petrol station called "BOVAS", next to the station is "Oronyin" street. Drive straight down and you'll see a big building which has many sets of shops for baby-stuffs.. Good luck!
