Should I Pick A Car Or House? I Need Advice

Hello WC family, please and please I need you guys to help me decide or find reasons before the weekend. A house and car are both items my family really needs at this time. We live in a rented apartment and have been doing the love treks for the past two years. I am right now in my last trimester and feel we need a car for mobility, especially when baby arrives.

We both have good jobs and have been saving for the past two years. My husband feels it’s time to start building while I want us to get a car first before
we start building gradually. I feel a house should not  be rushed but for a car, one can just walk into a showroom and pick one the same day.

I tried my best to convince hubby but he feels my reasons are not convincing enough and has given me up to the weekend to convince him on why we should buy a car first when we still pay rent in someone else’ house. Dear blog family, I need your advice on this.
Thank you.

  2. I'm of the school of thought that a family shld never have one car but two…..but I guess it speaks for the kind of person you both are that you are even sitting down to have this discussion, reasons to have a car? How about reasons for breathing? You both have been working for two yrs, married, expecting a baby and you are askin whether you should buy a car? May I ask how u intend going back from the hospital after your baby is born? Take a taxi? Or bus? Or have a friend that's obviously stupid enough to buy a car come drop you off? Pls I'm not married but I've been working 4yrs, I bought my first car before I even finished serving, and just traded it in for a better one. For someone to live anywhere in nig comfortably the person must have a car, and I don't mean the. High end cars, you can get a honda hala, heck you can even get a golf! What is your problem? How can u live without a car pls? My comment is not made to make people that don't ve a car feel bad but I feel this is a really dumb question,
But if u can afford a car and u want to go and use the money to build then u don't know what's important!
Please: if anyone can't afford a car yet pls don't steal to buy, but once u can afford to and u don't, then its plain stupid…..and if you two are still struggling to buy a car after working for two yrs, then I think you guys should also look for another job….that one na correct suffer head.
    Bless you

  3. Abeg u need a car, wat's with dis house tin? How can u be carrying ur baby under d sun and in d rain, entering keke, bus and okada and risking ur child's life? As long as you are both hard working U WILL BUILD YOUR OWN HOUSE, not just a house but houses.
Pls my darln, a car is not a luxury but a neccesity as long as a baby or babies are involved. Like d first commenter said, it doesn't have to be an expensive car, just sometin basic. Wishing you a safe delivery, *e hug.

  4. I think u guys should buy a car first now that u re expecting a baby,or do u want u,ur hubby nd baby to be jumping from one bus to another any time u want to go out?ok talking about d house,do u already have a land to build on?guess d answer is no,so instead of buying a land, starting a foundation and leaving it uncompleted, its better u buy a car nd save money for d house later.

  6. Anonymous 5:27 na beef, pls if u want to advice do it in a constructive way. My dear, even though I believe a house is very, very important but anon 5:27 has a point, the car doesn't have to be the best in the world, but u definately need it especially with a baby coming that's if u guys don't have one at all but if there's one in the house u guys should manage that one pending better days, all the best.

  7. My dear, nothing like mobility. Let's see why, it's cheaper than to build a house right now. Maybe u can both reach a compromise by buying a not too expensive car like an older camrey and still have a little to save up on and start the house latter. Imagine how you will be jumping danfo with your baby, a baby bag, your hand bag, looking all stressed out and haggard! Biko, I have imagine it, as I am in my 2nd trimester so, I hv told hubby that no matter what before the baby comes something must be done fast o, abeg ur hubby isn't gonna go thru as much stress as u would without a car o, hmmmm

  8. This hse wld be completed when???
Don't think buying a car wld stop u frm building.
When u r building its even easier to commute to ur site with ur own car.
If u don't know buying a car ( small one) is cheaper than cabs in d long run plus d convenience.
U can obviously afford a car so pls do, when u r in labour wat wld u do?? So in d middle of d night u wld call a cab or ask a neighbour to drop u off??
Its different if u can't afford one. Life is short and time goes very fast. Don't deny urself of little comfort.
When I got married I was still a learner, I cldnt reverse properly. one day my hubby travelled and my baby feel very ill. I cldnt drive out, I cldnt get a cab it was 2.00 am, I had to go and get my neighbour to reverse for me. Hubby almost killed me. What if there was no car??? That week I forced myself to learn d reverse that took me 2yrs o.
Pls get a car, a small one and u wld b glad u did.
Also considering that most affordable land dese days are in developing areas u wld even need a car wen u move in.
Pls point all these things out to hubby esp when it comes to emergency.
Am not sayin poor pple can't survive without cars cos they are surviving, d difference is that U can.

  10. Depends on how much you have been able to save up. Will it be enough to start and finish the house and make it habitable or you get stuck midway, continue paying rent and jumping on buses. Pls get a small, car to move around and start ur building project by the side. It took us over 4yrs to complete our house, can't imagine not having a car and having to wait till after 4yrs

  11. Please go for the car. Someone once said that 'a car is the cheapest luxury a man can afford'. Like the first anon said, it doesn't have to be a high end car. You can get a good car with with #1mil. The house can come afterwards.
Granted there are several other means of transportation but once you have your own car, you have the power to command your movement. To me,a car is not meant to be a luxury in a family but a necessity. Just imagine there's an emergency and your phone call away cab man is not available or the nice neighbour is not around, how will you cope? Buying a car won't stop you guys from building your own house and car is a one off spending but building a house is a continous spending spree till the house is completed. For the sake of your baby, please buy the car.

  13. if you weren't preggers I would have agreed with your husband, but having a baby in naija w/o a car sounds scary. Compromise maybe on an older car, then cont saving for the house if you guys don't have a lot. Good luck, can't imagine trekking in the hot sun and preggers; he shoul commend you.

  14. Without a car, u'll carry ur baby…
…Under the sun or in d rain
    With dedication and selflessness!
Let me tell u how to convince ur hubby, convince him by asking questions in a subtle way.
    1)How much av u saved?
    2)How much is d cost of buying/building a house?
    3)How much is a car?
4)Will u be buying the house and still paying rent? Took my dad almost 5years to build his house cos of omonile issues.
With his answers to these questions, u can convince and nt confuse him dat a car is necessary @ dis point in ur life.

  15. Buy a cheap car. Go 2 carsdey.com n get a gud offer. D money 4 ur car won't tak up all ur savings. N its vry important u hv one wen ur baby arrives. Only buyin a land 2 build on can tak up ur saving O. So try ur best 2 convince ur hubby

  16. Do ur best to convince you hubby oo. You do need a car when the children start coming and even now. Bsd, girl its been two years of saving, show something for it.
Building a house is not something small except you are planning to build a 1 room apartment which still is not a day job.

  17. U made sense more. Owning a home especially in lagos is the best but car is also important so IMO if u guys have a land already, buy a small car and use whatever is left after purchasing the car to start developing the land but if u don't have a land yet, I;ll advice you guys to get the car and den save up to buy a land soonest cos it's risky buying a land wen u're not ready to build cos of 'omo onile' wahala especially in lagos

  18. I don't know how you have been moving about but in my opinion, it is a crime against humanity ( your baby's) when you can afford a car and insist on straddling the life out of that child. Ahn ahn! I have never seen a baby taken in buses, tricycles or even cabs and not feel like that child is hurting somehow. In those places u squeeze when ur child is supposed to occupy his/her own car seat. So u intend to carry your baby, carry your bag, carry your baby's bag and then carry your groceries abi? I promise you when the time comes you will be doing it alone. Pls when u buy d car don't come and ask whether buying a car seat will hinder your house project. And like others said, what about times of emergencies as is sometimes the case with babies and children, what do u do?

  19. I think you have to buy house as well as a car also. You have to buy a house at minimum affordable price and rest buying a well maintained used car. Before buying a used car you have to check out the condition of car. If you need some advice on choosing a used car let me know.

  20. Question for everyone pls, what advice will u give to someone in this situation, living in her father inlaw's house with her hubby. And expecting a baby, and they only have money to either get a car or rent an apartment, can't get both at the same time, one has to come first. Which would u advice to come first? Aunty eya, pls make this a post if u can. Thanks

  21. They should rent an apartment and still get a small car. After that they can start developing their landed property. If they stay in Abj it cost less when you have your own ride than boarding cab to places.
