I Don’t Have Any Ideas On My Mind Again

Hi Aunty Eya, good afternoon. I am Austin by name and a fan of ur

wonderful educative Wivestownhall blogspot. I came across while

searching for food recipe on google and it has been helpful. Thank you

a lot, God bless in hundreds of folds.

Though there may be no silver or gold coins to pay for this selfless

service, but I have to say thank you.

However I am having a problem and I need your pieces of advice. I am a

graduate, unemployed, and I have been searching for job for quite some

time in the labour market, I dont trust waiting anymore, I have got

ideas and I am supposed to use them. This is the problem, I happen to

find the oven roasted plantain/boli and fish in your blog site, and I

had in mind to startup the business a long time, but I get discouraged

about 1 thing, ‘my customers location’ or the kind of place I can do

this business. I dont want to just do it any how,coz i am  putting

into consideration the well being of my customers & cleanliness. So

far, I was thinking of attaching myself to bars, but I also remembered

that there are suya, asun, chicken seller s around this places, and

this custömers who have come to drink may not wish to eat to fill. I

am in Lagos, and getting a personal space can be expensive. But, what

I want u to help mè with ,is to advice me ön other optional trade

spots i can select, coz i dont have anythn on my mind again.

  1. Austin, i think it depends on the capital you have at hand, you can make a small wooden shop or a container, then get few tables and chairs to put. you can start up your fish business. for the fish when you buy it in bulk its like 500 or so and you can sell them for 1000, but you need expert grilling skills so that your fish will be the best. or you can start small by just paying for small space and just get an umbrella as a shed. either way put this business into Gods hands and let him led you, you cant go wrong with him.

  3. Campus is a gud idea, but I dnt think it's affordable for student, cos the fish is like 1k each, and a plate can sell for like 1200 or more abi? Let's think of smthing else.. Maybe a kios for now…

  6. You said you have 'ideas', so what are the other ideas except this fish idea. I think you are getting it wrong. Saying you don't want to open a fish business in a bar cos of other things being sold, is like saying you don't want to launch an ipad cos there's a netbook already. You get? It doesn't follow.

What bar do you have in mind? What's the influx of customers like? What are their additional needs? Would they need fish? You don't have to add the plantain. Don't just stop at one bar. Go to other bars. Do a market survey.

Do you want to go to campus? Where are the happening places there? Who are your competitors? How do you want to beat your competitors?

Running from competitors doesn't guarantee your business succeeds. You are to be thinking of ways to use your competitors to your advantage. What is it that is going to be in your grilled fish, that'd make someone to buy only fish and not suya or asun. Something like that. This idea isn't bad. Just work in it and use your SWOT analysis. Hope this helps. Peace!

  7. You are right. I actually suggested campus cos here in Ph they don't sell their fish whole. They cut them in 100 and 200 bucks. You can also include roasted yam and sweet potatoes.

  8. While the campus idea is good, i think doing business in campus is a seasonal thing. Once the semester is over and most of the students travel it usually affects people who do business inside campus premises and those whose major customers are students. I agree with Jay, do a market survey of bars and you can even become a free lancer. You can start by offering to make for a friend or family member for a token for their parties and other events and who knows from there you can get referrals. Then before you know it, you will be highly sought after and then you can even afford to get your own space and staff. Little beginnings!!!
