Would You Name Your Baby After Your Parent?

Hello Aunty Eya, we are expecting and my husband wants to name our child after his late father. I never be met him but from the stories I hear, he was very mean and wicked to other people. I want a good name for our child. I don't want my child acting like the one whose name he inherited. Please I need advice.

Isn't it better
to search for names with great meaning or names of great people for our children? I want to give him my answer that I don't like his name choice but I need advice first.

  2. It is not good to name your child just for the sake of it. Your child's name should come by revelation. Revelation comes by praying, fasting and studying God's word.

When I tell people this thing, they think I am over thinking it, but it's not true. Your child's name should be revealed to you by God.

God has plans for your child. And his/her name is in that plan. Sometimes God's plans are wrapped around the name. I mean, your child will have that name forever, so you should put a lot of thought and effort into it.

So yes I can name my child my parents' names if those names are what God reveals to me. Your late father-in-law is not the first person to have that name, so I dnt see why his character wud be transferred to your child. It might surprise you to know that sometimes children behave like someone because they were always told that they behave like the person. (I hope you get my point)

Just tell your hub that you both need to prayerfully decide your child's name. And he shud have an open mind or else he will only be hearing his father's name and think that that is what God is saying to him.

Btw, I wrote this epistle on purpose. Child naming is much more spiritual ans important than we think.

I Luv the name: IKEM BU CHUKWU. (that if U are Igbo. it so revolves around the bearer.) I'm certainly gonna name my son that. There is nothing wrong with naming your child after any of the grandparents. Since your father-inlaw bore the name and he wasn't such a nice person, you can use another good and/or Famous person with same name and use him as a point of Contact for your baby. Right now, concentrate on shaping his Destiny with prayers. There is so Much POWER in the NAME and not who bears it.

    VALENTINE!

We were named by God even before we were born.

Apart from your father inlaw's character, does he have a good name? However, if the name will only remind you of his bad character, then it is a NO from me. Imagine he/she starts mishaving (God forbid) and you say, 'eh na your grand-father spirit dey follow you...'
Try to understand the rationale behind your hubby choice; then use wisdom to work on him. For example, present other options and prayerfully make a choice.

Naming ones child our old ancestor is a bad ideal. Not to talk of a wicked person. Prayerfully talk to your husband to stop the ideal because he too will regret of taking that step in the nearest future.
