Should I Believe These Pregnancy Stories?

For this our Naija, people sabi talk ehnnnnnnnn, once dem know say you get belle… Do this, don’t do that, na wa o. Abeg my people make una help me out wit dis myth. Does it happen or not

–          Drinking cold water will make your baby big or catch pneumonia.
–          Eating snails will cause your baby to drool a lot.
–         You must not allow anybody walk across your

leg, this causes the baby to look like the person that jumped or stepped over your feet.
–          Drinking chocolate beverages will make your baby big.
–          Bending down while pregnant would cause baby to be dizzy or have crossed eyes
–          A breast-feeding mother cannot get pregnant.
–         Do not sleep on your back, this could damage the baby’s eyes.
–          Wear a safety-pin on your clothes when going out to protect your baby.
I want to really know if these myths are true. My main concern sha is about eating snail bcos I love snail so much.
Thanks to every1 on WC.

  2. I'm pregnant and I've been told all this and more so I feel you.

Some actually have scientific backing.. e.g the sleeping on your back. You shouldn't do that cause the weight of your uterus and baby will be on your back, it'll cause backaches and also deprive your baby of nutrients. Best way to sleep is on your left side.

Cold water is all I take, my Obgyn said the cold water one is a myth.

My mum and grandma and mum in law all swear the pin on clothes one is true.

Oh, also you have to be careful how you bend/get up from bed. Try not to put any pressure on your back while bending.

I don't bother arguing with anyone when they tell me all this though, I just smile and keep it moving.

  3. Lol. I have two boys about 11months apart so I can tell you that you can get pregnant while breastfeeding. You shouldnt lie on your back when pregnant coz it disrupts bliod circulation to your baby and cuts your air supply especially in your last trimester. You should bend from the waist down coz it could affect the baby's position instead bend from your knees almost like you are squatting.
As for the rest, all myths.

  4. All false except

    – drinking a lot of sweet beverages (hot choc, soft drinks, juice) can cause ur baby to put on too much weight, 'cos of the sugar content (carbohydrate).

    – sleeping on ur back esp in later trimesters could interfer with blood circulation 'cos of the pressure of the womb, and potentially could affect bld supply to ur baby.

    – bending over will not make ur baby cross-eyed or dizzy but will hurt ur back. Bend with ur knees.

All the best with ur pregnancy.

  5. Abegi my dear, fogerrit. My last two visits to the doctor the woman that sells Banga rice to me said something about the pin ish, I only replied eeen? But inside of me I know better what to believe.
They told you okro makes baby drool, they told me okro helps for delivery, infact I should steam and drink plenty during labor – you see?all na warped believe.
The only thing on that list I go with is Chocolate – some of this beverages contains some high form of fats that it's not good to take it TOO MUCH. My SIL told me and I equally googled that bits of black chocolate is very good for a pregnant woman but I'd rather not draw to close to avoid being addicted.
As per sleeping on your back while preggers, especially from 2nd trimester? Its a NO, No. No not coz of baby's eyes but No coz the pressure of the enlarged uterus
and the baby will then rest/pressure on a large blood vessel, the inferior vena cava, which flows behind the uterus and
through the liver towards the heart. This
compression of the vein in turn can lead to less blood flowing back to the heart, and eventual decrease in blood pressure (hypotension). What I do in this case in to use 2 soft pillows and place then at my back then I can rest at an angle 45 degrees but for a short while tho. My best position is Left, I lie that way 80% of the time and my Doula says that's why I have minimal pain there each time she checks me.
Breastfeeding momas do get pregnant, its an individual thing. Some women as long as they breastfeed(even up to a year),they'll never take in while I've seen a lady that was breastfeeding and was pregnant at 3months after her baby.
EhEen they even told me not to stay in same house where there is a well fetching bucket and rope.
My advice? Forget superstition, make internet your friend and read books on pregnancy.

  6. You can take ice water if you like, I asked my doctor abt itn you can it snail, I had craving for it in my first pregnancy and my baby didn't drol. Too much beverages especially in the last trimester will make your baby big. Lying on your back stops blood circulation but at times its the only comfortable position but don't stay like that for long. Bending over is also not good as it affect the position of baby, its advisable to squat. But thr pin and crossing over are superstitions

  9. You know in your head that these things are not true so why acting like you realy need to be told what to do? Also, its not only in Nija that there are pregnancy myths so don't make it sound like its just a nija thing. Well, two things to be careful around is raw meat and raw fish. Wash ur hands and bowls and knife properly after handling raw meat in ur kitchen. Raw meat easily habours some harmful bacteria that can affect an unborn child very seriously. Also, don't eat raw fish (sushis and sorts) so be careful what u order if u find urself in fancy restaurant in the course of ur pregnancy

  12. soooooooooo funny, my dear some are just myth cos like the PIN stuff I never practiced it for once during my pregnancy cos I can't see any relationship between my babay and a PIN. The funniest part was dat all the people using PIN I asked why they use don't have a valid answer. The common answer was "because they said is good I should use it dat y am using it".

If snail will make your baby drool that means goat meat will make your baby bleat like a goat or cow meat will make your baby moo( just teasing you). My dear is what you believe, please listen to your doctor and forget about all these myth

I'm in my 3rd trimester of my 3rd baby and with this and previous preggs I don't and won't believe any of this myths. Sleeping on ur back can b done but not for long as pelvis and hip bone hurt most women wen dey sleey on their sides mainly.
Even bending is not very clear coz pregnancy stretches, exercise and preggy yoga involves some wierd bending that is apparently good for mother and baby.
Cold water beta sef, u shld see me crushing ice cubes like my life depends on it.

  16. @mrsDee yes, I suffered frm severe backaches in my first tw0 pregnancies, doc said it was normal. Yes it will soon fade.

@Poster; am a mom of 3. In all my preggies I drank milo a lot and yes I had all big babies!
I ate lots of snails in all preggies but no drooling baby!
I drank only chilled, I mean dead water but had very healthy bouncy babies!
I don't believe in pins cos I believe in a much more powerful n greater protector- Jesus Christ!

  17. Hi dear. A pregnant woman can continue breastfeeding. The milk does not harm the baby in any way. You can google it. It's just that some cultures frown at it.

I'm in my third trimester and I just finished eating snail lol, they r just superstitions and I still get to lie down on my back once in a while as long as I don't feel any pain or discomfort … As for chocolate or milo I haven't had those throughout my pregnancy cos it makes me fat even when I wasn't pregnant and doctor advised me not to take them as this is my first pregnancy , my advice is just try and check the Internet if ure not so sure and pls don't take advice anyhow

  22. Thanks to everyone, I really needed to confirm the "sleeping on your back thing and squints" even though I have read it on the internet. Truly most times in the course of the night after having slept on both sides, my back becomes my last resort. I just try not to stay long before i change positions.
The pin thing actually makes me laugh.

  23. The one about breastfeeding is it good at all, some people jus get a way with, I wish I could narrate this story very well for you, how a lady lost her home, her bone shattered not break ooh, shattered while trying to struggle with her husband and she was breastfeeding and pregnant.while pregnant u asked to eat iron , protein and all to maintain all the nutrients and take folic acid, because your are sharing yours with the baby, and everything in you drops, if you don't try to maintain these nutrients.same with breastfeeding, so imagine the both at the same time. Not a good one
