How to make coconut oil at home by Debbie
1.Remove your coconut flesh from the shell
2. Shred/Grate into small pieces with a food processor/knife/grater
3. Blend into paste as you would for coconut rice but use warm water
4. Squeeze out first milk in a bowl. Soak the chaff in warm water and

leave for say 10 min then squeeze into your bowl. Repeat this step about 3 times or until the chaff is bland in taste. Careful not to use too much water

5. Pour the liquid in a bowl and put in a freezer for saying 2hours or fridge for a few hours or overnight as you wish/time permits you.
After this time, if your bowl is transparent you’ll clearly see the milk separate itself from the water(i.e the cream will float ontop of the water in the bowl).
6. Scoop out your cream into a pot and on low heat, begin to cook and constantly stir with a spoon or spatula.
After few minutes(say 3-4) the oil becomes visible while your cream begins to form tiny tiny crumbs. Keep turning until you are sure all you have in there is dried crumbs and oil.

7. Allow to cool and strain.
The aroma of a homemade coconut oil cannot be over emphasized plus the crumbs too can be used to eat rice( so sweet).
You might want to keep that separated water for your rice or to mix with more coconut coz it’ll still have a relatively sweet taste.
The process is shorter than my writing, hehe
Tip: dark shell coconuts tends to yield more oil.

  3. It will. Diligently follow the steps, it's that easy. Plus it's healthier to make your own coz some store bought ones are made from copra(dried coconut flesh) and I read they should only be used for cooking so making mine helps me a lot coz I take one spoon of coconut oil/day whenever I run out of Pregnacare.

  4. The last time I made it(March), I used 14 small heads of dark shelled coconuts and I got about two third(2/3) of a liter. Am sure its more than coz I shared with my two sis inlaws and the one I mixed with shear butter for cream has lasted till today.

  6. The uses are much just like any other natural product. You can search for "uses of coconut oil" in Google and you'll see loads of info.
In my own stead, myself and my husband mostly suffered from medium degree acne and the topical use of this oil has tremendously worked wonders. I drink it as a supplement too
Alleviates dark flaky elbows, helps treat thrush in nipples, mixed with warm vinegar can soothe heartburn.

  8. Another question is hope when I rub the combination I won't be shining like I rubbed vaseline and also I hp it won't make me sweat profusely as that is one of the major reasons I don't rub creams.. As I'm stil a student its usually trekking, biking or public transport no AC car or office oo..

  10. @Chikoko, Coconut oil can replace groundnut oil in stews and for frying
@Anon, Personal I sweat more than I think an average person should, but using a mixture of this oil and shear butter doesn't make me over sweat. A little is better and goes far. Preferably used on wet skin as cream.
@Desom, The crumbs can be used to eat rice just as you use salad, I prefer it with jollof rice. You can even eat it like that.

  11. Hello Aunty Eya this is my 1st time commenting here or any blog but I always read I will commend you for a good job..@Debby does the oil and shear butter makes one go dark? And can I use on my face as facial cream becuase am having breakouts and dark spots on my face, or what would u reccomend?

  12. Some people say it makes one dark while others refute the notion. I don't think it makes me dark either, and if it does it means the other counter creams I used to buy have tampered with my natural color.
So far pimple and breakout are not near my doorstep, I don't mind if it darkens me afterall that's what first attracted me to hubby, lol
