Nigerian foods suited for pregnant women

I need Nigerian meals suited for  pregnant moms please.

These foods loved by Nigerian pregnant women, most of them are weird combinations.

Pregnancy makes a lot of women increase the quantity of pepper in their foods. Spicy foods are generally loved by many Nigerian women during pregnancy.

Read the mail below and the answers…

Hello Eya, help with Nigerian meals suited for pregnant palate…  Good evening. I’m an ardent reader of your blog and I think you are doing a great job, well done! I’m writing to you out of desperation. I know pregnant women are selective and very picky.

Some of us can’t eat well cooked food that’s tasty but enjoy foods that are peppery and almost tasteless. How to balance that with getting proper nutrition while pregnant is not easy. The foods suited for a pregnant palate may not really be nutritious but manageable.

Wish I know many Nigerian foods suited for pregnancy taste buds.

I just recently got

pregnant and though we are very happy and excited I’m having a hard time and struggling with nausea and food aversions.

Food that I usually enjoy now taste horrible in my mouth, I can’t keep anything down and I’m so worried that I might be harming my baby by not getting enough nutrients.

I have tried searching on Google for healthy and tasty meals for pregnancy, but all I come across are ‘oyibo foods’. So I decided to seek your help, please can you advise me on tasty Naija meals that are easy to prepare and well suited for a pregnant palate.

Any Nigerian meals suited for pregnant moms to eat.
Thank you in advance for your reply, looking forward to it. God bless you richly.  M.O

  1. Congratulations and welcome to the club.
To start with, no two pregnancies are the same (in Aunty Eya's voice for marriage). There's no easy way around it coz it ends in experiment, trying things till you pick what's best for your palate at the time(it might change in later trimester).
Get on fruits and fruits and more vegetables. Most of our foods are cooked and cooked dead and mostly you get best nutrients from fruits and vegetables.
I was born Igbo but one of my fav dishes was/is Eforiro. If I go by the normal process of squeezing steamed veggies and plenty oil with the frying,I'll miss out on my nutrients. So I skip the squeezing and use very little oil while making sure its fresh.
Oil bean(ugba) and local eggplant leaves(anara leaves) are such a rich combination and great for blood building. Wash/slice the leaves, mix with the ugba and add lil oil and a pinch of salt.
Beans is one food that goes for some pregnant ladies. I enjoyed moi moi in my first trimester even now. As for your beans, please always soak over night(or atleast 5hrs) before cooking coz of phytic acid. The soaking never makes it any softer and it keeps bowel movement from beans at length.
Truthfully most of our foods are just carb-ladened but you can always incorporate. Use steamed spinach(green)/onions to eat your rice. Instead of butter, use avocado pear to eat your bread. Buy hausa kernel(aki hausa in Igbo), soak for an hour, blend, juice it out and drink it in place of mineral. Egg is so good, I eat 2/day on days I can(damn the weight thing they talk about eggs jare).
Lastly for now, buy shear butter(ori) and coconut oil(I like making my own oil that way am sure of using fresh nut instead of copra-dried nuts),melt the butter in a low heat, mix with same quantity oil and use as a tummy/hip/thigh cream to avoid and eliminate stretch marks. Infact I discarded my cream as use this as body cream and I glow enough to make hubby convert to it. Choi!see my long tory, no vex o I like typing

  3. I had Nausea in first trimester, just manage because Second trimester…you will be eating like a whale. Try eating groundnut to wade off the Nausea, look for walnut too. Eba and ogbono soup actually helped a lot,Rice and stew didn't work for me. Try yam porridge, ugba and Ukwa.

  4. Congrats! Pele. What you'll have appetite for depends on you o. No two pregnancies are the same.
I suffered from nausea till 4th month and I could only eat hard Akamu with okro and pineapple. My obgyn said its ok to eat the things u can tolerate in d 1st trimester. Your baby doesn't need much right now. Even if its just cracker biscuit(they say it doesn't cause nausea, though didn't work for me),keep eating it. There will be @ least one food you can eat till around 4mths when the feeling will get better.
Hope you're taking your supplements o. Pregnacare with folic acid is good. Just make sure you don't miss taking folic acid everyday. Hope this helps.
God will see you through and you'll deliver safely, normally and with divine ease. Take care dear.

  11. Aww Congrats and welcome to the club! 😀
I'm in my second trimester and pregnant with my first baby. I've learnt that:

    1. No two pregnancies are the same, and when it comes to food you have to experiment and experiment till you get it right. I had a friend who was constantly telling me I must eat this and I must eat that, meanwhile my body didn't agree with some things she suggested.
My first trimester wasn't so bad though, I did have nausea but I think I threw up about 4 times, mostly when I took milk as my body didn't agree with milk at the time. I also found that I started craving beans in any form, beans and pap, akara, moi moi, beans and corn porridge, etc. Eating crackers and bread worked for me too, and boiled yam. Indomie with lots of pepper also helped as the pepper helped to suppress my nausea. Oh I also took lots of 7up when I felt nauseous. It worked wonders. Chewing ginger too helped for nausea

    2. Please take plenty fruits and vegetables. What I do is supplement my carbs one way of another with vegetables. E.g I'd eat rice with moi moi and meat/ fish or rice with plenty efo riro. I also try to eat fruits each day. Oranges, apples, watermelons are my best buddies now. Lol.

    3. Please visit babycentre.com and register, you'd need to enter the date of your last period and they'd calculate your due date and based on that, send you detailed weekly emails on your baby's development and other helpful info.

    3. Start taking PREGNACARE now. You don't need it with folic acid though cause pregnacare contains 400mg of folic acid and that's the daily amount you need. I suggest you add iron supplements though (I'm using Ferrodan) cause its low on Iron, it contains about 17mg while you need about 30mg or so daily.

I know the rest isn't food related but it helped me and might help you:
    4. Try some form of exercise… Walking is what I do best, in the evenings.. If you're not an exercise person, start small, maybe 10,15 minutes and build it up gradually to about 30 minutes.. The little exercise plus the cool evening breeze helps me to be active, plus google Kegel exercises and Pelvic Lifts. These can be done at home and help strengthen your pelvic muscles.

    5. Try to take lots of water, and pee once you feel the urge to so as to avoid having Urinary Tract Infection which is really common in pregnancy.

    6. Please get original ORI (Shea Butter) and start applying to your breasts and belly now to avoid or reduce stretch marks. You could also get Coconut Oil and start applying that to your nipples to get ready for breastfeeding so you don't have sore or cracked nipples.

    7. Please get a copy of SUPERNATURAL CHILDBIRTH, its a fantastic book which helps build your faith during pregnancy. Try to read the daily confessions every day as its important to build your faith now.

    8. Please stop sleeping or even lying on your stomach or back. Lying on your stomach will become uncomfortable as Funke said, lying on your back puts the weight of your uterus and baby on your back and may cut off circulation to your baby. The best way to sleep is on your side, your left side actually cause this way ensures that enough nutrients flow from your placenta to your baby. It might be uncomfortable at first but you should get used to it now.

That's all I can think of now. Lol. Hope I helped.
    All the very best dearie!

  15. Just seeing this.
1.Remove your coconut flesh from the shell
    2. Shred/Grate into small pieces with a food processor/knife/grater
    3. Blend into paste as you would for coconut rice but use warm water
    4. Squeeze out first milk in a bowl. Soak the chaff in warm water and leave for say 10min then squeeze into your bowl. Repeat this step about 3 times or until the chaff is bland in taste. Careful not to use too much water
    5. Pour the liquid in a bowl and put in a freezer for say 2hours or fridge for few hours or overnight as you wish/time permits you.
After this time, if your bowl is transparent you'll clearly see the milk separate itself from the water(i.e the cream will float ontop of the water in the bowl).
    6. Scoop out your cream into a pot and on low heat, begin to cook and constantly stir with a spoon or spatula.
After few minutes(say 3-4) the oil becomes visible while your cream begins to form tiny tiny crumbs. Keep turning until you are sure all you have in there is dried crumbs and oil.
    7. Allow to cool and strain.
The aroma of a homemade coconut oil cannot be over emphasized plus the crumbs too can be used to eat rice( so sweet).
You might want to keep that separated water for your rice or to mix with more coconut coz it'll still have a relatively sweet taste.
The process is shorter than my writing, hehe
Tip: dark shell coconuts tends to yield more oil.

  29. @ MrsA: African salad is not bad in itself but for the potash used in preparing it. U should prepare it urself n skip adding potash. As for peppersoup, u must prepare it urself ensuring dat u skip d "uda". Dnt buy already made 'peppersoup spice' cos u dnt knw what is in it. Uda is supposed 2 be taken after delivery to help flush ur system esp ur womb, dats why it can cause miscarriage n must be avoided during preg.

  46. Please don't use both without confirming from your Doctor. You should have let the second Doctor know about your previous prescription. Look at the composition of that pregnacare just in case it contains folic acid so you don't overdose, just stick with one until you Con firm with a Doctorman ok?

Try bland foods like akamu, roast plantain, try abacha, food not cooked by you, drinking garri etc. Your husband can use them outside on his way out, the aches will all disappear by God's grace in your second tremester or later. If the discomforts are unbearable, go to the hospital ok? You'll smile very soon.

  61. Sorry about your other pregnancy and congrats! You should be happy that pregnancy doesn't disturb you and please ask your Doctor before exercising, could be dangerous. You lost your first pregnancy at 6 months? Try your best to start ante natal clinic before this pregnancy gets to 6 months ok. Safe delivery. God is in control.

  62. Afang is like every other vegetable we cook, very safe but can cause discomforts if over eaten and no pregnant woman should eat until they fall sick. When you eat afang soup for lunch, try not to eat it again for dinner as vegetables eaten that way purge some people. Eat something else in between. Even if the only soup you crave is afang, I'll advise you try and eat other foods in between the afang licking.
Safe delivery! God will take care of you and the baby.

But one mind asked me not to eat it cos of uncertainty of spices, so, i simply brought out my meat, added ginger, lots of crayfish and pepper with that black thick stick (uyak or isakirisa) and cooked my own soup. You should research it too. Its just for pregnant mothers to be careful.

    Thanks

    Thanks.

I can't cook or stand the kitchen which makes me sad cause busy husband is starving. I dont have appetite for anything around me. I throw up ay least twice a day from food, water and smells and have to take drip once in a while due to dehydration. Days when I do have slight cravings, I cannot eat unless someone cooks for me. The worse is, my cravings are food back home which is hard to get where I am here in the U.S. I'm craving efo riro, ewedu and stew with amala, gbegiri and pounded yam, fried yam from those women frying at night by the road side, agbalumo, fura de nunu, bread and hot akara in the middle, roasted yam and hot sauce, porridge yam with enough red tatashe, roasted titus fish or Kote with correct Ijebu garri, garri and kuilikuili would do sef. etc. Im just wishing I could visit Nigeria to eat all I want. Supernatural Child Birth is a good read. I listen to Andrew Wommack afterwards to really grow that faith. God help us all and give us children after his heart who would really impact this world for good.
