What Is The Proper Code Of Conduct At Nigerian Wedding Receptions

I have to do this again, my earlier post was misunderstood. Lol. What I meant with all the story about myself was just to let us see what happens at receptions and to say if that is proper or not. I am so happy that no one
condemned my supposed action of loading my plate with a little of everything. I expected condemnations and since I didn’t get, should I just assume that is the proper thing in our dear country. If it is then I better try to belong too. Lolz

I do not load my plate that much at any reception, neither do I leave my house hungry to attend events It is forbidden in my house o, even when kids go for parties, I ensure they put something (food)  in their little stomachs before going out. They don’t like it but do it anyway. One funny thing about me is that even when invited for lunch or dinner, I make sure I eat something  from home before going out. It helps me not to be too hungry when food is served. Why I feed the girls before they go for parties or even sleep overs is to make them eat little outside. Do you know even the Bible says that when we are invited to sup in someone’s house, we should try and eat something before going out to avoid eating like gluttons.

The story about The Event Reception Etiquette was meant to make people angry but to my disappointment, no one is angry at my supposed attitude.
I am so used to being misunderstood anyway. Or maybe I wasn’t clear enough. Now I want to rephrase the question…
Is It OK To fill one’s plate  to the brim and then Eat EVERYTHING displayed at a wedding reception?
Isn’t it more respectable and classy to take a little like  ladies that we are?

  4. @OLUWASEYI, thank you, The reason for assorted dishes is to let every guest see something they'd like to eat.
For me, I take a little of either fried or jollof rice, then add fish and snails and that's enough for my little tommy. It feels good when a lady has little food on her plate. Yes, it does.

  7. I will take little teeny jollof rice, little snail, little chicken, little plantain, little moi moi, little salad, little fish, little goat meat, little shrimp, little fried rice, little kpomo…When I am done with those little things…I will be needing Big flask to pack it. Aunty Eya,sometimes the people who organised the party will be urging you to eat, they'd rather you eat than for the food to waste especially when its much. Me

  8. You see a lot of food,
    you want to see everything,
you eat & can't stand up from the chair,
You manage to drag urself home,
You lie down facing the ceiling,
You start talking 2 yourself "God ooo help me, who send me self, my belle the pain me",
You rush to the toilet after 2 hours, feeling tired and drained out.
Aunty Eya, eating every is dangerous.

  9. To me it depends. I always eat well before going to the party so dat I can do 'longer throat' eating. Since my tommy is full anyways, I end up eating fish, meat, salad, moi-moi and other orishirishi. If it's not a 'serve urself' party, I just eat the fish or meat on my plate and leave the rice.

It's not right to over eat or load your plate like a glutton but I dnt see anything wrong in sampling around. Most people who make all Nigerian dishes available at their parties, do it to show off. Let's tell ourselves the truth. We do it to impress our guests…..so lemme help them and be impressed na.. 🙂

  10. Some who don't evn kno d couple involved will struggle and almost incur injuries ova gift items. It's rily bad. I attended a wedding sometime lst year n dere ws dis particular lady that I regarded so much with high esteem. I gt disappointed at d way she hustled for all d varieties of food, small chops n drinks. Sadly, I discovered shortly that she was a "mo gbo, mo ya" candidate. For a clearer understanding, she ws invited by someone, who ws invited by some other person, who ws also invited by someone who probably saw d IV by mere chance. It doesn't jst tell well of ones personality @ all!!

  12. Eya, all the nice comments was because you are loved
Well, as you asked clearly about party etiquette, the key words are RESPECT YOURSELF!
Like you,I eat well from home and still put snacks in the car, incase the food does not go round. As for buffet styles, I pick what catches my fancy.

  13. I think it all has to do wiv upbringing. As kids my my mum always ensured to load our stomach wiv food before going to a kids party so we won't be tempted to do long troat. Till today my dad @ his age doesn't eat @ ocassions.so I feel it's wrong and classless to load ones plate @ any function.
