15 Most needed kitchen tools to get for your kitchen

The kitchen as we know is the
Powerhouse of most Nigerian families. It is the most visited part of the house. The kitchen is visited when people are hungry, thirsty or just bored and looking for a snack. Cooking is what we do most in the kitchen. For most Nigerians, cooking and eating at home is mandatory for all family members.

A whole week of seven days, many families eat out just once ( Sunday Lunch). This means that, for the remaining six days of the week, cooking and eating is done at home.  Because women love beautiful things, most times, when we go shopping, we pick all the fancy kitchen tools and forget the most needed ones.

Some kitchen tools are more needed than others

It’s not every kitchen tool in there that we really need or use daily. There are some we just can’t do without at every round of cooking. These are the ones I will try to list here. In many Nigerian kitchens, the most needed kitchen items are:

Your Most needed kitchen tools  aka kitchen utensil or kitchen gadgets

  1. A cooker: This is where meals are cooked. The cooker should be the one that uses both gas and electricity. Most times, when there is high voltage, I save my gas by using the electric plate. I love to bake with electricity cos it saves me gas.

A cooker that makes use of both is a must have. Whether you cook with a kerosene stove or not, it is a must have because you never know. I once forgot to refill an empty cylinder until the second one emptied itself late at night. Unfortunately, the voltage was so low that night and the kerosene stove came in handy. Just a small stove you can lock away in one of the kitchen cabinets.

  2. A Set Of Pots:
Pots come  in different sizes, small ones for cooking smaller meals while large pots are used for large meals. When you shop for pots, look for heavy pots. Very light pots tend to get heated faster, but, there is one disadvantage; they burn food easily. A good pot should act like non- stick and kind of prevent food burning so quickly.

  3. Can Opener:
This is another kitchen essential that you can’t do without. Some good can openers do more than cut tins, they are also used for opening wine bottles and doing other things in the kitchen.

There are those that open from the top and the ones that open from the side of the can. A good can opener must be firm and very sharp, shaped almost like a scissors.

  4. Hand Towel:
I can’t imagine a kitchen without hand towels. They are one kitchen tool I use the most. When I cook, I cannot count the number of times I wash my hands. Without a napkin, water drips and messes the whole kitchen floor.

Hand towels cover all types of kitchen towels; paper towels, cloth, and even sink towels. These towels are a must have, to be hung by the sink and also kept/hung where they can be reached with ease.

They perform so many functions, drying hands, helping when we handle hot objects. Sometimes we can’t find oven gloves or are too lazy to wear and what comes in readily are a covering of the hands with towels.

  5. Bowls:
Kitchen bowls help with measuring items like grains in the kitchen, we also use bowls when we wash vegetables and other items in the kitchen. They serve like semi sinks and it is advisable to have them in different sizes. I love bright colored bowls.

  6. Kitchen Clock:
The importance of this item in the kitchen cannot be over-emphasized. We need to time our baking and cooking daily, I know I’m lazy with timing my cooking, *wink* The kitchen clock prevents us from running out of the kitchen every now and then to check the time. It helps a lot especially when you need to pack kids lunch boxes and also get yourself ready for work.

  7. A grater:
This is a must for all kitchens, especially Nigerian kitchens where we grate yams for ikokore and other porridge meals. A good grater should have different hole sizes/parts. The smallest holes are used for grating water yam for ekpang, grating nutmeg and coconut for coconut rice.

The medium sized holes are used for grating carrots and cabbage, it’s a necessity for people like me  who  do not have vegetable graters. The biggest holes can be used for cutting long shaped plantain for plantain chips or cutting boiled cassava for Abacha.

  8. Sieve: I like to have more than one sieve in the kitchen. One with smaller holes and the one with larger holes for washing chopped or shredded vegetables. Sieves play a major role when we wash parboiled rice and when we drain the water from cooked food.

Please, please, please an insecticide isn't something you should have in the kitchen
We are better safe than sorry oh..use piff paff or all those powders for cock-roach….u should never spray an insecticide wit the fire on because it can lead to an explosion&it won't be funny @ all
If u are lucky enough to have a kitchen that has a door, please open d door&just chase d mosquitoes out but don't ever leave an insecticide there please so u don't spray an ant out of anger when d fire is still on

  5. In my humble opinion,I prefer Paper towels to napkins..Because the napkin even if used for just a day can transfer germs to hands and cooking surfaces..It's just that in 9ja,paper towels are yet to be very popular but trust me it is a must have..I was my hands every minute, you just tear a portion, clean ur hands or any surface and toss and unlike what pple think it is stronger than toilet tissue and it absorbs water any liquid spill well..For pple that don't know paper towels,it comes in a roll that resembles tissue but it is long..

  6. That's true. insecticides can be dangerous if used incorrectly, likewise the mortar/knives pressure cooker etc. I use them though for the irritating house flies that once in a while comes in from the surrounding environment. I really can't stand them incl cockroaches. Creative Mom
