Recipe: Nigerian Meat pie By Ope

Recipe: Nigerian Meat pie By Ope.  Hello, This is how I make my Meat pies

Ingredients for Nigerian meat pie

1.5kg of plain flour (About 12 cups)
500g of butter
100g of trex butter. It makes my pastry soft. (Optional)
1 teaspoon salt
little water to make the dough
5 medium sized carrots
2 teaspoons of thyme
2 teaspoons of atagungun( powdered chilli peper) sorry am bush
45 medium sized irish potatoes
11/2kg minced meat you can use 2 kg if you love them extremely meaty.
any other seasoning of your taste, preferrably 2 knorr or maggi chicken cubes like me.
Bisto Gravy granules or flour(acts as a thickener). You can use flour or knorr gravy powder as thickener, they all work just fine.
egg white for glazing (brushing the meat pie before baking)

Nigerian Meat Pie Procedure:

I dice the carrots and potato, add little thyme, seasoning(i use knorr chicken)..put little water and boil till potato and carrot is soft
I added my frozen mince meat( i got them from the grocery store), little atagungun and covered for few mins. After it boiled,i stirred it and added two spoons of gravy granules to make it thick and less watery( some people add a bit of plain flour) but i prefer gravy granules, its better.
After few mins, I set aside to cool while i make the dough
For the dough,I add flour, 500g butter and the trex butter(this is not compulsory but i like it as it makes my pastry soft and tender).
I use my hand mixer with dough hooks to mix it and make the textures grainy, more like egusi like texture..lol( i use hand  too to do this, i was a bit lazy here besides its quicker
Then using my hand, as i add little water,i start moulding it into a dough, just keep adding the water little by little, till the dough is achieved.
Then i sprinkle my board and roller with plain flour, and start cutting it out.
I used a round bowl to make the shapes as i don’t have a meat pie cutter.
i put little of the mixture in the centre, use my brush to put  whipped eggs on the edges before folding it together(the egg acts as the gum so it doesn’t open). i  use a fork to seal the edge and make this lines.
Then I brush the top with egg before puttng it in the oven.
I actually made about 30 pieces of meatpie from this measurement..it was a lot but my younger ones and boyfriend love it so I don’t mind  the stress…
I put my electric cooker at 160….i know its done when they have browned at the top.i keep checking though..i leave it for about 30-40mins..but don’t take my time for it…every cooker is different.
when it’s properly brown, they are done.
I hope i have helped.

God bless.

In case my earlier meat pie post discouraged you from making meat pies, well, no excuse now. This is the bomb. With Ope’s meat pie recipe, I ‘m going to shock you all with my next meat pie attempt.
Ope and all our food recipe contributors are really helping a lot. If it were for my recipes alone, we’ll eat noodles until they grow on our heads. *wink*

  1. I don't understand this method..You boil the carrots n potatoes 1st,then add the fresh mined meat to pot?why not cook the meat 1st then halfway to it been almost cooked,we add the carrots n potatoes? Will the meat not taste raw if its not well cooked and won't the potatoes n carrots get too soft?I'm confused

When u talked abt ur pastry looking like egusi, I immediately tot u were talking abt the short crust pastry but the final pic didn't look like it. Do u have any idea how to make dt? My godson is coming over this weekend and wld want to surprise him with it. Sorry guys for not commenting like I used to. Unfortunately, my maternity leave has ended and I've started work. I'm a pediatrician in training preparing for exams and combining dt with family etc can really be tiring. Will make out more time to comment. Take care. Creative Mom
