99% of Rice smuggled into the country not fit for consumption- CG Customs

Image result for bags of rice

The Comptroller-General of Customs, Mr Hameed Ali at a joint news conference on illegal rice importation into Nigeria Tuesday in Abuja, said 99% of rice smuggled through the land borders into the country are not fit for human consumption.
He said:

“Importation of rice into the country is not banned but restricted on the point of entry to seaports only. `We remain firm in our resolve to enforce the restriction of rice imports only to our seaports. “We have re-organised our anti-smuggling patrols to provide additional capability and bite,’’
He added that samples of some of the rice seized by Customs over a period of time were referred to NAFDAC to ascertain their condition. But that test results have certified that smuggled rice through the borders was unfit for human consumption and discouraged Nigerians from buying them.

He said:
“We have seen rice conveyed in open wooden canoes across our creeks and water ways with generous amount of dirty waters splashing on them. “We have seen some mixed with other grains bags to deceive customs; some are stuffed inside any available crevice and compartments of vehicles, including the engine area.
“The concealed rice is thereafter re-bagged half cooked and presented in our markets for sale as imported rice.
“Bags of rice meant for Nigerians’ consumption (are) being conveyed in coffins inside make shift ambulance vehicles. “Often time, importers in the borders have to wait for months for the green light from corrupt customs officials before they gamble their ways across the borders.

How To Cook Less Expensive Nigerian Fried Rice

A plate of less expensive fried rice with chicken
Fried rice has many cooking methods. This less expensive one came when
my girls told me point blank that if I add peas, kidney beans, sausages or liver, they are not going to eat. They are tired of me adding too many vegetables to their fried rice.
I promised to cook with just cabbage and carrots. That's exactly what I did and they ate like never before.

For fried rice recipes, GO HERE For how to coat chicken before frying GO HERE (coating with only egg white and bread crumbs will give great results)

Fried rice doesn't have to be loaded with veggies, it can be cooked kind of plain with a few vegetables.
Sorry about this

Local Palm oil jollof rice with dadawa, smoked fish and vegetables

Nigerian recipes
Palm oil rice with dawadawa, smoked fish and vegetables
Palm oil local jollof rice cooked the same way we cooked the palm oil rice and beans but this time instead of beans, we added dadawa and vegetables. This is very filling and delicious. Those who don't like fresh fish will still enjoy this because smoked fish tastes really good without all that fish smell.

  • 3 cups rice
  • 1 fifty Naira wrap of dadawa (locust beans)

Fake Plastic Rice, Be Careful

Can anyone fake rice? I doubt it. Plastic rice sold on the Chinese market has reportedly found its way into various Asian countries, including India, Indonesia and Vietnam.
Consumers say that such rice is also found in many prominent brands. Many reported to have caused gastritis and other stomach related diseases after its consumption. Consumers say that these kind of rice is undetectable because its comes mixed with normal rice packs.
Health experts have warned that consuming such fake

My Sharp-sharp Nigerian Jollof Rice

Well, this might not be much news, but at least let me

Cooking is one of my favourite past-time.
Yes naa, how did you think I stumbled on Wives-Connection three years ago. I cant wait to show my hussy my small cooking skills...heeehee.
Although, im suspecting I might employ a trained cook , and that's because mental work itself is big work. But until then, let me keep practicing my culinary skills as a single lady jare.

Back to the gist, see, I love cooking so much I can cook straight from sleep, not that I'm a pro though, just that I enjoy cooking. And, I try to get creative too, mixing all sort of spice. But lately, I've cut down on most of those spices, especially when WC recipes hardly mention them.

So, I made this Nigerian sharp sharp jollof rice this morning, abi is it emergency rice sef..At first I didn't
want to share, but then I said, why Not.

It's my sharp-sharp jollof rice picture story.

Twas quite delicious. Nothing much went into the
prep, apart from the remaining smoked hotdog and small chicken( smoked too) in the freezer, haaa, yes, I added small garlic to the pepper before blending.

Pepper + tomato+ small garlic+ onions = pepper paste.

The pepper wasn't smooth . What else did I add O... haa, yes, I added curry and thyme
I wanted to add dry fish, but I forgot... lol.
By the time I remembered, my rice was done, well, it can't waste, im using it for my soup tomorrow.

OK, so here's the picture story. ENJOY!

The making. I fried the onions first before pouring the pepper mixture.

When the pepper was a bit fried, I added the hotdogs and chicken.

Recipe: How to cook tasty tin tomato stew; convert to Nigerian Jollof rice

Making very good canned tomato stew is not as difficult as most people think. My tin tomato stew doesn't taste sour and it's because of the cooking method. You can cook tin tomato stew that's as good as bukka style stew without mixing fresh tomatoes. I made this stew for jollof rice as shown on the pictures below: With fresh tomato scarcity, you can still enjoy good rice and stew; good jollof rice at home.

How To Make My Simple Fried Rice Sauce

 my simple fried rice sauce
Dear Diary,
making this quantity of sauce didn't take much time because it was Christmas, the house was full and so, there were many helping hands. It was so delicious. The plan was to cook so much so that the left over is shifted to dinner. At the end of the day, we had to eat something else for dinner because the gigantic pot of rice was cleared. I mean every single grain was eaten at lunch!

  •  1 small cabbage chopped
  • 4 lare carrots
  • 1 medium sized green pepper
  • 1 cup green peas
  • 1/4 cup kidney beans (Optional)
  • cow liver (optional)
  • 1/2 cup sweet corn ( well, I enjoy the sauce more, when sweet corn is not added)
  • 1 large onion

102 bags of plastic rice intercepted in Lagos

Be careful where you shop for Christmas and New year rice! The Federal Operations Unit, Ikeja, of the Nigeria Customs Service has intercepted 102 bags of plastic rice branded “Beat Tomato Rice” with no date of manufacture.
The Customs Area Controller of F.O.U. Comptroller Mohammed Haruna, on Tuesday in Lagos said that the commodity was stored for distribution as Yuletide gifts for the public.

Haruna said that officers of the unit intercepted the plastic rice along Ikeja area on Monday, adding that a suspect was arrested in connection with the seizure.

He said, “Before now, I thought it was a rumour that the plastic rice is all over the country but with this seizure, I have been totally convinced that such rice exists.
We have done the preliminary analysis on the plastic rice. After boiling, it was

Image result for Nigerian wedding caterer needed

Aunty Eya, please help me post this on your blog. Im getting married end of next month. We have already sorted out everything except food. We did not intend to leave it till this last minute. This is what happened. We are wedding in my husband's church so some of his friends suggested we use one woman eho is a caterer in their church. I havent attended a wedding she catered to but I have eaten food she cooked fot a food program and it was nice.

When we approached her in June, we told her what we wanted which is rice (jollof and fried rice) for 350 (but upto 400) guests, swallow with 2 soups ie egusi and vegetable(afang) for 150 guets, Salad for 250 guests, moin moin for 200 guests. She gave us a budget of 170k. She is not buying meat as we are buying a cow. Three days later, she called me and said she gave wrong budget, that she would do it for 220k. I told her ok, lets remove the rice. She is suppoed to cook one and half bag of rice. After removing the rice, the total amounted to 187k. We agreed and signed an agreement that first week of October, we would give her 150k. We already bought the rice. The cow is not a problem.

Aunty Eya, imagine my surprise when she called me on Friday to say that she can no longer collect 187k,  that its 280k last. Remember we have bought rice and cow. I tried to reason with her that the wedding is 3weeks away and there is no way we can top 100k extra for her like that. She said she miscalculated with her earlier budget. I asked her if that was my fault. If she is a professional caterer as she claimed, there is no way she would have given us wrong estimate TWICE!! I tried to persuade her to understand because our finances have stretched thin but she wouldn't budge. Now its 3weeks to my wedding and I have to look for another caterer. I would appreciate swift, good and affordable recommendations. This is what i want and my budget is 200k. I can go slightly higer though:
