10 Differences Between Nigerian Buns And Puff Puff

Nigerian buns and puff puff can be confusing to some but not a kpof kpof lover like me. Both Nigerian buns and kpof kpof are delicious snacks loved by many. So many Nigerians prefer puff puff, me inclusive. Others prefer the harder version which is buns. Sometimes I see something that falls between puff puff and buns being called puff puff. Who else notices that? There is a clear difference if you know the two very well.

When I see puff puff being sold by street snack hawkers, sometimes I get confused because puff puff balls shouldn’t look that firm and perfectly round. When loaded in a container, good puff puff shouldn’t look that dry and round like golf balls, should be a bit crushed under heavy weight. I don’t know who agrees.

Both buns and puff puff are what I call fried bread dough. They are both deep fried into balls. The process and ingredients might be same some times except that puff puff flavour gets enhanced with nutmeg powder.

The difference between Nigerian buns and puff puff is not much that’s why some people easily get confused.

Let’s look at some differences between Nigerian buns and puff puff. These ten differences below are just my opinion to help learners differentiate between these two twin brothers called puff puff and buns.

  3. Same sized buns and puff won’t weight the same because buns is heavy while puff puff is light.

  5. Another name for puff puff is oily bun.
  6. Baking powder is used in buns whereas yeast is used in puff puff.
  7. Puff puff is used as small chops at Nigerian events. Buns is not served.
  8. Pepper is sometimes added to puff puff. No pepper in buns.
  9. Their recipes are not the same. Puff puff takes longer to make as you have to wait for about an hour or more for batter to rise.
  10. Milk is added to buns but hardly seen in puff puff recipes.
