How to make baking flour swallow fufu

This baking flour swallow was just a trial. When it turned out perfect, I told my people that I’m going to share it on the blog. For as long as I have known baking flour, I have always had that feeling that we can make swallow, that we can make fufu from baking flour if we tried. The opportunity never came for me as I never needed to swallow without finding garri or yam to pound.

I told myself that if I find myself where there is no garri available, no wheat to make into wheat swallow fufu, if there is no semo and no yam to pound into swallow fufu, that I will try making my swallows with baking flour because honestly. This me that is typing here cannot survive without swallows and correct Nigerian soups from time to time.

HOW THE INSPIRATION FOR BAKING FLOUR FUFU CAME THROUGH

The thought to one day try to make swallows using baking flour has always been at the back of my mind but I never put it to practice. So, last week, I started to see comments about some Nigerians in the diaspora using baking flour to make swallows. When I Googled “How to make fufu from baking flour” There were no results. Only plantain fufu and others came up.

This evening, I had to bring out my flour to see if making it like semo and amala will work. It worked and behold here is the fufu from baking flour. If you know how to make baking flour fufu, you’ll never crave fufu and not find something to swallow. Baking flour is available all over the world. At Least you can find okra and shrimps and fish and other sea foods to make correct Nigerian okra soup and enjoy with your easy baking flour fufu.

For this baking flour fufu, I used two cups water to one cup flour. Added vegetable oil to the water. Why do we add oil when making our swallows?

  1. To prevent stickiness.
  2. To help improve the texture of the swallow. Dropping oil in the hot water makes the swallow feel better and smoother. It also prevents it from sticking in the bottom of the pot.

If you can make amala, you can make wheat swallow, then you can make this baking flour fufu. There is no difference in the method except that with baking flour fufu you have to turn the heat off after water boils and turn it back on a bit later while stirring the swallow.

So, I present to you making flour fufu swallow with easy steps below:

EASY STEPS TO MAKE BAKING FLOUR SWALLOW FUFU

  1. Boil water in a pot.
  2. Add some drops of vegetable oil
  3. When it begins to boil, turn off the heat and start sprinkling in the flour while stirring with a turning stick (Spatula).
  4. When you notice the lumps are disappearing, you can turn the heat back on and continue to stir.
  5. Sprinkle in some more baking flour if you notice that some stubborn lumps have refused to vanish and if the swallow fufu is still softer than you want. Sprinkling in flour helps fix things up.
  6. Stir until swallow is cooked. You will know it’s cooked from the look and feel but do not turn the  stove off yet. Let it cook through.
  7. When the cooker is off, what we do is wrap our swallows in bread bags (Cellophane bags) and give them some time to cool off a bit before enjoying with some delicious Nigerian soup.

NOTE:  If you add palm oil to the hot water, your swallow fufu will look colourful like above. If you add vegetable oil, it will look like semo. I prefer the one with vegetable oil.

Enjoy your swallows anywhere in the world!
