25 THINGS YOU SHOULD NOT DO IN THE KITCHEN

If there is no sitting room, TV can be watched in the kitchen, newspapers and other media can be taken to the study. But, if there is no kitchen and you live in a Country like Nigeria where people grow up eating cooked meals from home, what do you do? You drive out everyday searching for restaurants that serve peppery breakfast, lunch and dinner?

The kitchen is that part of a home that cannot be left out in any piece of good architecture. Who builds a home and demands that the architectural design/blueprint shouldn’t have room for a kitchen.

Even in much developed parts of the world where people don’t have to cook home meals like we do over here, kitchens are still very important whether they are used for cooking or storing.

I can comfortably survive in a house without a sitting room, bedroom and even dining room. Just give me a very spacious, well fitted kitchen and I won’t tell you how I’ll turn it into a home but trust me, I’ll survive comfortably with my small mattress hidden somewhere in the pantry.

Well, you know what? The kitchen, full of sweet aromas and delicacies can also be very dangerous with hot surfaces, sharp objects and washing chemicals kept in there

HERE ARE 25 THINGS YOU SHOULD NEVER DO IN THE KITCHEN:

  1. Quickly move away from a falling knife, never try to catch it. Whether it be a cleaver, vegetable knife, sharp, blunt or table knife. Don’t catch, let it fall.
  2. Never forget to wash hands with soap after chopping or washing pepper.
  3. Do not place scouring powder and salt side by side or in same containers.
  4. Never store eggs in the freezer however bad your electricity situation. One day, neighbourhood electricity might improve while you are away.
  5. Never  try to open the oven when it’s on fire.
  6. Do not  blow out fire from a burning pot on the stove, quickly place the lid back on instead, that’s if there is no kitchen fire extinguisher installed in your kitchen.
  7. Never place a pot or pan of oil on the fire before leaving for an errand. Turn off the heat till you are back, however brief the errand.
  8. Do not cook and serve any dish before tasting. You must taste your cooking before serving to others. If you are fasting or cannot eat that for medical or other reasons, get someone to taste your cooking before serving.
  9. Never use wet or damp napkins to handle cooking pots or pans.
  10. If you hate blunt knives, then never scrape your kitchen knife against a chopping board to remove chopped veggies or food.
  11. Never use metal utensils on your non stick pans. They’ll ruin the non stick.
  12. Never stir boiling rice unless you are making Nigerian jollof or Risotto. For white boiled rice, let it cook undisturbed.

  14. Never  flush rice down the kitchen sink.
  15. Do not flush chopped or cooked vegetables down the sink.
  16. Never leave the kitchen with unwashed hands after crushing seasoning cubes (Bouillon). They leave bad smells in the hands and not every soap is capable of taking that maggi, knorr or onga smells from your fingers. You need to use deodorising soaps or strong dishwashing liquids. Bring the hand close to your nose after washing, to ensure there are no more smells. These smells linger….
  17. Do not  flush medications whether expired drugs, or unwanted, dispose properly. Don’t empty that syrup or crush the tablets down the kitchen sink.
  18. Never leave dirty pots and cutlery while travelling, even if for a few days. If you do, when you return, you’ll sure regret and just might spend some good money trying to deodorize, fumigate the kitchen, the house and remove stubborn stains on cutlery.
  19. Do not  throw out food before use-by-date. Never throw out food before Best-by-date.
  20. Never stack washed drinking glasses. You’ll sweat trying to separate them. A few might get broken if you can’t use Google to learn tricks.
