There has always been a misconception of the secrets to looking good. Some say its skipping meals or going on a strict diet,others say it is only strenuous exercise. But thinking about these secrets, how long can one skip meals for? how long can one be on a strict diet for? What happens when one is unable to exercise?
Losing/gaining weight is about the body metabolism. A high body metabolism means that food (calories) is burnt faster and so reduces weight gain/ fat. While a low metabolism means that food is burnt slower thus when food intake is more than the usual amount , the excess food that could not be burnt stores as fat in the body. Having explained this, some of the do’s and don’t secrets to maintaining metabolism ( hence the weight) are as follows.
a) Have your normal 3 square meals daily but in small portions. Why?
i) Eating in small portions makes it easier for food to be burnt.
ii) Skipping meals to lose weight lowers the metabolism speed and so when one goes back to having 3 square meals, the body stores excess food the rest as fat. This explains the reason for the boom-bust-boom observed in some people’s weight.
b) Exercise at least 3 times weekly .Why?
Exercise boosts one’s body metabolism because one needs energy (from burning food) to perform them. Daily exercise is really recommended for those who are on the very big side and desire weight loss. Examples of recommended exercises are cycling, running, walking, jogging.
c) Drink lots of water .Why?
i) Toxins are created while the body burns food slows down the speed of metabolism. Water flushes out these toxins out of the body thereby boosting metabolism.
ii) It suppresses appetite thus reducing calorie intake.
d) Eat lots of fruits and vegetables.
e) Have a proper night's sleep.
a) Don’t forget the saying that you are what you eat. So, avoid or reduce the intake of foods with high sugars and fat.These include, snacks, white rice, bread or pasta, pounded yam/eba, fizzy drinks. Instead consume a small quantity of white rice/brown rice (If you can), whole-meal/brown bread, brown pasta/spagetti, fruits and vegetables .Even if the temptation to snack is irresistible, snack on low fattening foods such as unflavoured popcorn.
b) Don’t eat past 8/ depending on your sleeping time so that consumed food could digest properly before going to bed or else it is stored as fat.
c) Don’t eat too much carbohydrate or protein such as going on a low carb or vegetarian diet.Try and eat a balanced diet but don’t forget in SMALL PORTIONS.
d) Don’t give up and never say it is impossible. This is applicable to those who want to lose a lot of weight. Do not hesitate to pick up when you slack. It is all about hard work, determination and relentlessness .Most importantly, commit all into God’s hand and ask for his Grace.
