Learning a foreign language has become very necessary for me. Kids bring homework for supervision, I do it successfully in all other subjects except French Language. Every time there is home work in French Language, I keep my head straight, put a little frown on, before giving the response " Leave that one for Daddy or go check Online" If I do not put that little frown that makes me very serious, I will have to answer too many questions for not knowing the answers to "that simple French Homework"
The kids are learning French in School. Hubby can speak English, French and German fluently and even a bit of Japanese, so, why can't I just try to speak at least one foreign language. Am I that dull? I announce to them on Sunday evening that before this year ends, I will not only be learning but speaking French Language in this house. They ask how and I refuse to say. Why should I? when all I want is shock them with speaking.
however, very early this morning I went on YouTube (Learn French For Beginners) and surprisingly, I learnt the Alphabets, vowels and a little bit of blending. I keep telling the girls that "we can do anything if we put our minds to it" Now is the time to apply that myself. I will attend my classes only when they are not watching, will not talk about it again until December.
While people travel oversea to enjoy Christmas, my family has a habit of Celebrating Christmas in the Village. So I will wait until we get to the village, then shock them with Christmas greetings in French and let them know that my Christmas wish is to hear only French language being spoken in the house. Let's see who will make fun of who!

A cousin suggested that I learn Chinese instead. That China's Economy is growing fast and with time we may need the Language to be able to read User Manuals and instructions for items we purchase. Well, I want to wait for that time, I feel like Learning French will be easier for me. Some words and alphabets sound almost like English, so, for a busy woman like me 'rolls eyes' it is better and easier to start with the known before proceeding to learn the unknown. I really need some tips right now. Are there tricks to learning this language faster?
*I will sure hide in the closet, if I fall my hand by December 25.*
There are questions raging through my head. Is it possible to learn a foreign language and begin to speak fluently within a year? They say the success or failure depends on the learner's interest, I am INTERESTED. By December 25, if I am able to greet and make simple sentences, will that be considered good enough to brag about?

hahahaha.......
ReplyDeleteyou can definitely learn the basics before Christmas but maybe making long sentences will be a bad idea.
it helps too if you can find someone to speak the language with
Merci Luciano, I won't dare go near long sentences. Ok now, who do I speak with when I want to keep it a secret for now? I better start here.
DeleteAu revoir.
I wish I can learn another language aside this ingbatigbati that I speak. I envy you oh, I have been learning hausa for over a year now.
ReplyDeleteHow far with the Hausa? Can you make long sentences now?
DeleteAu revoir ingbatigbati o.
Lol. I wish u d best o.
ReplyDeleteMerci @ilola.
DeleteI don't envy you Eya,
ReplyDeleteI took French for two years, Welsh for two years and Latin for two years in school. I learned Russian for one year. Now I can only speak a little of each and wish I'd have taken Welsh for six years because most people here speak Welsh as their first language. I shall have to try to get a conversational class started at church, I think that is the best way to learn.
au revoir Eya
Merci Brenda, that conversational class is going to help you remember the ones you forgot.
DeleteAu revoir.

DeleteKnowing a second or third language is an advantage. I learnt French in secondary school and now I've forgotten most of it. So you're saying you'll learn in one month? OK o, I will be cheering you on :)
ReplyDeleteHahaha Youtube is your reminder anytime. No, not everything. I will learn greetings and short sentences for now. Come next year, French will become my second Language.
Deletehehehe... two words: Rosetta Stone. Besides, your husband seems to have it covered lol
ReplyDeleteMerci for the info, I just subscribed to Rosetta Stone French. I will show him that YouTube can give me a second language. Au revoir.
DeleteThe surest way to learn a second language is to lay your hands on all the textbooks on that language, burn them and sprinkle the ashes on pap or akamu or custard, mix very well and drink. You will automatically speak the language as it will be in your system. LOL
ReplyDeleteCan I mix with green tea?
DeleteI like your determination Eya. I tried once, but had so many things attending to, so....
ReplyDeletecatch ya on the French side of life!
